"For the truly adventurous theatergoer, I have a deliciously odd couple to recommend in a decidedly odd play: Mink Stole and Penny Arcade in “The Mutilated,” a little-known late play by Tennessee Williams, which is being revived in New York for the first time in nearly four decades at the New Ohio Theatre."
—Charles Isherwood,
The New York Times, September 5, 2013
It’s Christmas Eve in the French Quarter of New Orleans and the night is filled with carols, misfits, sailors, hookers, cops, quarter rats, grifters, secrets, betrayals, and lots of wine. Tennessee Williams said about this funniest, strangest, most neglected, and most moving of his later plays: “The style is kin to vaudeville, burlesque, and slapstick, with a dash of pop art thrown in,” and he called it an “allegory on the tragicomic subject of human existence on this risky planet.”

"Revived under Cosmin Chivu’s direction, The Mutilated was nothing short of brilliant. It’s the interplay between Celeste (Arcade) and Trinket (Stole) (who eventually reconcile their differences) that steals the show. They take the audience on a merry romp, with moments of bathos, lewdness, violent outbursts and crude jokes reminiscent of Stephen Daedalus’ mythic journey into Dublin’s Night Town, a red-light district, from James Joyce’s Ulysses. When we finally arrive at the end of this hellish romp, we are filled with triumph and despair, having witnessed the shredding and ultimate refastening of the bonds of friendship and humanity."
