Bessie Award winners Rashaun Mitchell & Silas Riener return to Danspace Project with the premiere of their latest work, in collaboration with Davison Scandrett and Claudia La Rocco.
Noted in Dance Magazine‘s "25 To Watch" for 2013, these former Merce Cunningham company members have been collaborating on site-specific installations, improvisational dances, traditional proscenium pieces, and immersive experiences since 2009. Inspired by a mutual interest in space as an agent of performance, their work responds to complex and active spatial environments.
"It is still a conversation around bad and good taste, and the racial, cultural, class issues that inform taste. Glittery sweaty mess. Apollo & Dionysus. They don’t look like anything else. Almost immediately after we exited the rental car, a Chrysler 200, a man approached—one of those indeterminate approaches, in which you are pretty sure but can’t quite tell if this is someone asking for money. He wanted to shake hands. We didn’t want to. “Don’t worry, man, the black won’t rub off on you.” The amount of labor that goes into a dance is astounding. Their relationship is a public one. We all think about sex. Maybe you think about it a lot. Look at that leg, what he can do with it. The body works it out. The body gets closer. It’s not always easy to look."--Claudia La Rocco
