  • From 17 December 2013, at January 9, 2014 Matilde Calamai exhibits her works at the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, in New York at an exhibition titled “The Odyssey Within”.

Matilde CalamaiItalian artist Matilde Calamai creates abstract visions as compelling as they are mysterious. Combining an abstract and figurative approach, Calamai takes familiar shapes and forms and transforms them into liminal spaces that push the boundaries of all we know, opening up new vistas of perception. Intertwined throughout is a strong emphasis on emotive exploration, achieved through layers of bold decisive colors and textures that are infused on the canvas in unexpected ways. Much of Calamai’s work has been inspired by her travels through the African continent, and this influence can be seen in the colors and materials that dominate her art. Even though there are figurative elements, her art transcends the traditional, as she creates a free and experimental style of expression that allows her to go deeper within. As Calamai explains, “It is for me an experimental journey, which keeps me searching for strong emotions to mutate into a colored atmosphere.”
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Matilde Calamai is also a poetess, author, lyricist, journalist, and television host. She currently lives and works in Italy.

    Exhibition Dates: December 17, 2013 – January 9, 2014

    About the Exhibition

Through the artwork of Sensorial Realms the audience is reminded of the unending power of curiosity to illuminate aspects of both ourselves and our lives. The creations resonate on a visual, mental and emotional level, touching the audience in multiple and manifold ways. The artists whose works appear in Pathway to Abstraction present their individual perspectives in entertaining and energetic pieces whose considerable appeal lies in their ability to shed new light on old mysteries while leaving new secrets tantalizingly hidden. The works in The Odyssey Within display a degree of enlightened introspection that is both rare and intensely alluring. Combined with a perceptive view of the world, the result is a collection of unforgettable and enduring art.

  • Exhibition Dates: December 19, 2013 - January 5, 2014

"Art & AIDS: Perceptions of Life," is the fifth year at the Leslie-Lohman Museum for this exhibition featuring artists living with HIV and AIDS.

One hundred works of art, utilizing diverse media, will be on display. The exhibition is an outcome of work from weekly therapeutic art classes run by GMHC's Volunteer, Work and Wellness Center.

Art teachers donate their time to teach classes for GMHC's clients (consisting of professional and non-professional artists), and assist in curating the annual exhibition.

The exhibition's curators, whose artwork will also be featured, offered their thoughts. "Volunteering to teach the art classes at GMHC has been very rewarding,” said David Livingston. "It is great to see my students progressing in their artistic endeavors, helping them build confidence." Osvaldo Perdomo shared: "The exhibition displays prevalent issues as well as hopeful messages from people living with HIV and AIDS. Some of the artists will be sharing their personal truth which is not an easy thing to do. I thank them for their courage."

The work that is sold during the exhibition, allows the artists to increase their financial independence which is particularly important for those who live on a limited income. Plus, the artists are then able to participate in additional art shows as most galleries mandate that artists must have already been part of one show.

At the opening reception on Thursday, December 19, members of the Imperial Court of New York, a longstanding group that raises funds for community-based organizations, will be volunteering their time to greet guests as part of the festivities.

Proceeds from sales go directly to individual artists. Selected pieces will be available for the silent auction during the length of the exhibition, benefiting GMHC.

bitforms gallery is pleased to announce PostPictures, an exhibition that re-imagines Douglas Crimp’s groundbreaking Pictures exhibition. Reflecting on Crimp’s legacy, PostPictures includes seven artists from the United States who work with new media techniques and contemporary modes of image construction. The exhibit presents a range of artworks that generate 2D spaces of dream and phantasmagoria, while seamlessly synthesizing elements of pop-culture, surrealist thought, and pictorialism. The work responds to imagery found in daily life, and disrupts the systems of representation using pastiche and appropriation. As Crimp’s 1977 essay for Artist’s Space explains, “the realm of imagination has reappeared to displace the analytic and perceptual modes of our recent past”. He cites a shift in representation that frees the photographic image from established modes of signification. For example, Jack Goldstein’s use of pictures is described as Freudian and paralleling “the image retained in memory”.

The PostPictures exhibition at bitforms gallery proposes a movement in the visual arts that is guided by everyday immersion in, and reliance on, the Internet for constructing illusions of reality. An expanded camera lens, one enabled by computational and networked practice, informs a complex new generation of artists. In their work, the immediate access to pictures can be felt in the way that narrative is implied and rendered. Just as the Pictures generation artists were responding to newspapers, magazines and television, a now-emergent group of artists are native to the realm of mobile devices and computers. The work created by artists with this mindset engages the representation of online and gaming environments, as well as previous forms of mass media.
