NEW YORK, NY (October 8, 2013) - Photographer Elizabeth Waugh and curator Laura O’Reilly announce the launch of The New God, an ongoing photo project documenting the faces of a new creative generation. Beginning as a highly stylized series of over 150 black-and-white portraits, The New God launches as a dynamic project that will translate Waugh’s photographs into a variety of media over the course of the coming years. The scope of the project will take the form of everything from a physical exhibition of printed photographs to a hand made, unbound, printed quarterly. The New God will celebrate its project debut at Wallplay in New York City on October 17th from 6 to 9pm with a multi-media presentation of photographs, digital installation, and projected imagery from the eponymously titled project and forthcoming book by photographer Elizabeth Waugh. Work featured for The New God launch will be on display October 17-31 at Wallplay located at 118 Orchard St. in New York City.

The New God exhibition will be hosted on Wallplay’s multiple platforms as a physical and digital presentation of photographs from this series. Work will consist of six photographic prints; 12 digital installations presented on screen displays; projections on the Wallplay building facade; and an ongoing digital experience accessible online at www.thenewgod.com.

Through striking black-and-white portraits that celebrate the promise and triumph of a visionary generation, The New God documents the emerging culture of Millennials, an increasingly powerful segment of society, aged 25-35, that defies convention and continues to write its own script. In this culture, Millennials themselves are in fact their own medium. From photographer Elizabeth Waugh’s artist statement, she defines the project by stating:

“The New God is portrait of a generation engaged in reconceiving a world from nothing and emerging triumphant and beautiful from war and recession. A magnificence rising up, these new Gods are the brazen heralds of a coming day.”

The New God was conceived by Elizabeth Waugh as a title for the series of portraits slated as a book to be released in 2014. After being photographed for the project, it was clear to curator & media sound artist Laura O’Reilly that The New God was much bigger than a book. Waugh is documenting a movement, capturing the voice of a generation that creates on its own terms and definitely doesn’t ask for permission. From her curatorial statement, Laura O’Reilly says,

The New God is an invitation to consider the fact that you have a soul. We have the power to manifest light in the face of darkness and economic fear. The New God is not about religion; it is about the human spirit.
