Charge .!

What kind of person sees a grenade and deliberately falls on it with his OWN body to protect a fellow Marine, even though he KNOWS he’ll probably be killed in the process?

A person like Cpl. William Kyle Carpenter. And that’s why President Obama just awarded him the Medal of Honor.

The President said:
“Corporal William Kyle Carpenter should not be alive today.
But we are here because this man, this United States Marine, faced down that terrible explosive power, that unforgiving force, with his own body — willingly and deliberately — to protect a fellow Marine.”

Sometimes I think we overuse the word “hero”, but not in this case.

In 2010 in Afghanistan, Cpl. Carpenter and another Marine were involved in a firefight with the Taliban.
Suddenly a grenade landed near them.
Carpenter didn't hesitate.
He instantly fell on it to protect his friend.
The grenade exploded and Carpenter took the brunt of the impact.

“I didn't have any vision.
It was almost like I was looking at a TV with no cable signal.
It was just kind of white and gray static look.
I couldn't hear anything.
My ears were ringing loud from my blown ear drums.
I felt like I got hit really hard in the face by a two by four.
And the next thing I remember is feeling like warm water was being poured all over me from the blood loss.
The few seconds I had left, I thought about my family and how that they were going to be devastated that I wasn't going to make it out of Afghanistan alive, and how I'd die without getting to see them again.”

“My last thought was…I guess you could say I got right with the man upstairs.
I wanted to use my last seconds to … I wanted to go to heaven.
I knew that and like I said I knew it was over so, my family, that quick prayer, and I got really tired and just felt like I wanted to take a nap and I woke up six weeks later at Bethesda.”

Carpenter had suffered major injuries.
He spent two and a half years at the hospital.
He underwent 40 surgeries.
His arm was broken in 30 places.
He lost an eye.
He has a partial new jaw and teeth.
And he has a number of skin grafts.

He also has an amazing attitude.
He is now a full time student at the University of South Carolina.
And he just completed his first marathon last year.

During a recent interview with WLTX-TV he was asked if he’s surprised when he thinks about what he did.

He said:
“I will say no.
And not in any way patting myself on the back.
As Marines the only people we have, and that we deploy with, and that we live and die besides is each other.
I know if 1,000 Marines were put in the same situation I was in, they would do the same thing for me.”

Cpl. Carpenter makes me PROUD to be an American.
We could sure use more people like him in this world.
Wouldn’t you agree?
