QUILTED TROPHY HEADS MOCK CUT THROAT POLITICS IN "FAIR GAME"
On September 14th Melissa Ichiuji (voted one of the top 100 Washington DC artists last year) will unveil her latest series of sculptures at Galerie Lareuse in Georgetown. The show features the severed heads of 10 political personalities who have captured media attention for their popularity, alleged transgressions, or general evilness. The heads are mounted on wood panels in the manner of taxidermy trophy heads emphasizing the brutality of media spin and public scrutiny.
Ichiuji's work gravitates toward the salacious and rarely pulls punches. She has appeared in art in America, NY Art Magazine and made the cover of the Washington Post Style section in 2006 for her performance entitled STRIPPED where, perched on a platform in front of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, she deprived herself of basic comforts including food and shelter in an attempt to purge herself of excessive stimulation and consumption.
Ichiuji says of her latest work "With this series I am challenging the tradition of portraiture that elevates its subject to affirm his or her nobility virtue and power. I wondered what a political portrait based on current media coverage might look like. What might these people be remembered for? What are they thinking? What are their fears? Would they recognize themselves?"
