S.E.M. Ensemble performs
MUSIC OF EXTENDED DURATION
MANY MANY WOMEN by Petr Kotik on text by Gertrude Stein, 6 voices and ensemble
Wednesday, June 19 | 7pm - Midnight
Staging the complete Many Many Women is a rare occasion. Since its premiere in 1979, the number of full performances has been fewer than a dozen, counting concerts in both the United States and Europe.
Many Many Women is an open form composition, without a distinct beginning or ending, a work of a scale that is not possible to encompass in its entirety. One may listen to the whole, or enter and exit at will. In her 1936 lecture about masterpieces, Getrude Stein said:
It is another one of the curious difficulties a master-piece has that is to begin and end, because actually a master-piece does not do that it does not begin and end if it did it would be of necessity and in relation and that is just what a master-piece is not.
Many Many Women may or may not be a masterpiece, but it is not a response to necessity and it certainly does not have a beginning or ending.
S.E.M. Ensemble includes: Kamala Sankaram & Sadie Dawkins Rosales (soprano), Patrick Fennig (countertenor), Kelvin Chan (baritone), Steven Hrycelak (bass), Petr Kotik & Martha Cargo (flutes), Thomas Verchot (trumpet) and William Lang & James Rogers (trombones).
