Paul Mpagi Sepuya
Studio Work
Book Launch and Signing
Sept 4, 5-7 PMRefreshments provided~
We're pleased to launch a new book from artist Paul Mpagi Sepuya.
Sepuya's Studio Work collects formal portraits, snapshots, still-lifes and documentation of the studio space, created during his residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem from 2010 - 2011. The artist writes: "I am exploring how the studio environment, as the site of creation, editing, and accumulation affects and frames portraiture, and the performance of portraiture." The project builds on Sepuya's earlier domestic and bedroom portraits of his intimate circle, as well as his interest in zine and book production. Studio Work presents a narrative framed by time and shifted by formal repetition; slight changes in subjects and materials present.
The book is edited by Felix Burrichter, and includes text by Wayne Koestenbaum.
For the launch we'll also have a series of fundraising prints available from Paul, as well as a signed special edition of the new book.
The Studio Work project, since premiering at the Studio Museum in Harlem exhibition 'Evidence of Accumulation' in 2011, has been presented on a larger scale at Franklin Art Works, Minneapolis, in Fall 2011/12. Selections have been shown this Summer at The Center for Photography at Woodstock, at Vogt Gallery, and Andrew Edlin Gallery in New York City. The exhibition will travel to Artspeak, Vancouver, opening February 1, 2013, and Toronto in Fall 2013.
